Does reformer Pilates burn fat?
Practicing reformer Pilates will tone all muscles especially the arms, legs and the mid section, improving overall body shape giving a leaner, more sculpted and stronger physique. This will increase the resting metabolic rate resulting in more calories and fat being burned throughout the day.
Is reformer Pilates good for you?
The Pilates reformer requires all muscles groups to work through their full range of motion. By improving flexibility, stress and strain on the joints and muscles is greatly reduced. Additionally, the increased efficiency of muscle contraction means that workouts are more effective and everyday movements being performed with less stress or fatigue.
Is reformer Pilates OK for beginners?
At Enso Pilates the classes have been created to offer many different exercises using equipment that caters for all levels of fitness and experience. Reformer Pilates builds strength in the powerhouse (core) muscles which improves posture, flexibility and balance regardless of your fitness or level of practice. Reformer Pilates can be modified in many ways to provide either gentle strength training, a stability programme or a challenging workout for the more athletic client.
What should I eat before a class?
Although reformer Pilates is not particularly aerobic (unless you opt for a rebounder class) it would not be ideal to arrive to class after having eaten a large, stodgy meal. I would recommend either a small bowl of cereal, peanut butter or avocado on toast or a small nutrient packed smoothie for breakfast and a healthy sandwich, a small bowl of soup or a salad for lunch or dinner. This all really comes down to the common sense of the client, listening to your body during ad after class can help you make light, healthy choices.
What should I wear to class?
Anything you are comfortable in! Something that allows you to move and that will not restrict you. Bare feet are OK but a pair of grip footsies or ankle socks is ideal. Try to avoid clothing with zips or knots/ties down the back as this could prove to be uncomfortable (or possibly damage the equipment).
When will I see/feel a difference?
This varies from client to client and is dependent upon existing injuries, how much physical activity they do outside of the Pilates class, and how many classes they attend per week. On average, most clients see significant results (feeling fitter and stronger) within 10-12 sessions. “In 10 sessions, you feel better, 20 sessions you look better, 30 sessions you have a completely new body.” Joseph Pilates. Like with anything, the more you practice, the better you will learn and change.
The Pilates method of exercise was established by German born Joseph Pilates. Reformer/cadillac Pilates is a method of exercise performed on spring resistance equipment targeting conscious movement. By combining the mind, body and spirit a coordinated movement is created providing you with improved posture, alignment and physical wellness. Joseph Pilates called his exercise programme "Contrology", the unity of proper body control, breath and balance.
Contrology will discover your core muscles or your ‘powerhouse', it will improve your flexibility, strength and most importantly it will provide you with an awareness of how you hold your body in space (proprioception) which can help prevent falls as the body ages. The exercises target the whole body and can be utilised in conjunction with other athletic or leisure interests.
Pilates develops long, lean muscles and a strong core; essential to maintaining good posture and alignment. Even after one session, many find they sit and stand taller and move more gracefully. Everyone can benefit from Pilates!
